Let’s jump right in and examine some ‘family issues’ from a pedigree and functional conformation perspective, and, although there are sections specific to English (Jumping), Western (Barrel Racing) and Thoroughbred Racing, I think that much of the information is interchangeable. Certainly the thought processes are. Those of you in the northern hemisphere are into breeding season and those of you in the southern hemisphere are probably starting to plan this year’s matings, so I have tried to include information (sometimes in the form of questions) that may be of benefit. There are quite a few photos to back up the observations and add to the learning experience – yours and mine. Included are the results and a different perspective of a major jumping competition (demonstrating a growing trend) as well as the results and analysis of the 8 races in the Sunshine Millions (which may challenge some beliefs). And the Close Up View is of the point of hip and the LS (lumbosacral dip). And Ceci Flanagan-Snow starts her series on horsemanship. --------------------------------------------------------------------- In this issue we’ll look at several different things, but if there are themes, one is regarding lightness on the forehand and the other is about specialization. There are a lot of photos! In the Close Up section we’ll see the results of a less than ideal pillar of support in competition horses. This series on soundness-related construction was initiated based on reader input. In the English section we’ll see if we can find an explanation for a horse that failed in one athletic endeavour (racing) yet excelled in another (eventing) by looking at his pedigree and his conformation. In the Western section we’ll look at medal-winning reiners from the World Equestrian Games in Germany, and we’ll compare them to a running Quarter Horse and a dressage horse. Where do you think they will fall on the scale between the two? In the Racing section, we’ll look at Skywalker, his son Bertrando, several Bertrando offspring, and the offspring of one Bertrando daughter. What traits are stamped? Which miss a generation and which are lost? And Ceci Flanagan-Snow continues her thought provoking series on horsemanship.
